SEMINAR IN CONTEMPORARY CRITICISM, METHODS, AND THEORY

Same as C LIT 490 Seminar in Contemporary Criticism, Methods, and Theory. Topic: Theories of Cultural Studies. The theory seminar this semester will focus on the theories and incarnations of various aspects of cultural studies: basic groundings in Marx and Freud, overviews of structuralism and post-structuralism. Special attention will be paid to the development of the field of cultural studies as it integrates aspects of literary theory, deconstruction, visual cultures, feminism, gender studies, post-colonial theory, semiotics, and mediology. Attention will also be given to the interrelations between theorizations in the humanities and those in the social and hard sciences. Prerequisite: An introductory course in criticism or consent of instructor. All readings and discussions will be in English.
