“You Freud, me Jane?”
Comparative Literature 461: Film & Psychoanalysis
Professor Lilya Kaganovsky
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Spring 2003
Tuesdays 2:00-3:50
1134 Foreign Languages Building

This course will provide an advanced introduction to psychoanalytic and feminist film theory. In conjunction with the readings we will screen a series of films in order to develop a common cinematic vocabulary for speaking about the construction of gender and subjectivity, spectatorship, ideology, and the cinematic apparatus. No prior film courses are required.

Readings will include texts by Freud, Deleuze, Lacan, Mets, Mulvey, Silverman, Williams, and Zizek, among others. Films to be screened are: Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger (1975), Alfred Hitchcock’s Marnie (1964), Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima mon amour (1959), Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972).
