CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY

This course covers major social theories of the twentieth century with a thematic focus on subjectivity, power, and culture.  Theorists read and discussed include: Dorothy Smith, Joan Scott, Judith Butler, Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adomo, Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard, Pierre Bourdieu, C. Wright Mills, Mary Douglas, F. Saussure, C. Levi-Strauss, Jacques Derrida, Antonio Gramsci, E. P. Thompson, Althusser, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, Edward Said.  The course requirements include weekly written comments, and two papers.
